We talk to Wigan fan page TalkLatics (@TalkLatics on Twitter) ahead of tomorrow’s clash with the automatic promotion contenders at the DW Stadium.
What do you make of your team’s transfers in the summer window?
“Unlike recent summer windows, the last transfer window was relatively calm.
Despite not actually spending any money, we’ve brought in some decent players. Jamie Jones has been superb in goal, and players like Ivan Toney and Gavin Massey have big potential. Our best signing was probably Chey Dunkley who we signed from Oxford, he’s looked very assured in defence alongside Dan Burn which has made for a very formidable defensive record, at home especially.”
What do you think of Blackburn Rovers’ summer deals?
“From the outside, it looked like you’d done some good business, but seemingly it’s taken time to come together. Peter Whittingham has always been a very decent player, so I was suprised he dropped to the third tier.
I remember being very impressed with Bradley Dack when he played against us for Gillingham, so I’m sure he’ll be key in your promotion push.”
Who is your team’s player to watch and why?
“Really it couldn’t have gone much better, if it wasn’t for Shrewsbury’s incredible start we’d be top.
We’re already 8 points clear of third place which is incredible for this stage in the season, especially given last time we won this division we weren’t in the top 2 until February.
In all honesty, we’ve probably not been at our best in the last few games but players like Nick Powell and Michael Jacobs really make the difference at League 1 level, some games appear to be too easy for them.”
How has the first two months and a bit of your season been?
“Our player to watch would be Nick Powell, who scored against you last season. If he’d have been fit last season, there is no way we would’ve been relegated.
Many Wigan managers have tried and failed to get him fit and interested, but Paul Cook appears to have done just that and it’s paying off big time. He has the ability to be playing at a much higher level.”
How do you see your season going?
“I think we’re very good bets for the title, even in games where we’ve struggled we have been able to scrape by and pick up results quite easily. I’ve not seen a team as good as us yet in League 1, although I get the impression Saturday will be tough.”
What should we expect to see from Wigan Athletic?
“A 4-2-3-1 formation without doubt. We’re usually very attacking at home and you can expect our two fullbacks in Byrne and Elder to be getting forward at every opportunity. We’ve got real quality in midfield so expect to see Power, Morsy and Powell spending a lot of time on the ball.”
How do you think the game will go?
“I think it will be a good game. Both sides got good wins last weekend and both sides have players who probably shouldn’t be playing in League 1. We’ve only dropped 2 points at home and we were extremely unlucky to drop points in that game so I expect us to keep up our winning streak at home with a 3-1 win.”
“As mentioned in the last question, Wigan Athletic 3-1 Rovers. I think Powell will score 2 and Jacobs 1 for us, with Conway for Blackburn. Wigan V Blackburn games at the DW tend to be good games and I can see this game being another.”
