Tomorrow, Rovers take on York City at Bootham Crescent, the home of the Minstermen. @roverschat provides a comprehensive preview of the friendly game here.
After beating Barrow 2-1 with the last kick of the game, and then narrowly losing 1-0 to Sparta Prague, Rovers have experienced mixed results. However, results aren’t the main part of pre-season, fitness is.
York should provide Rovers with a test of fitness, and allow them to get a step nearer to full fitness for when the league kicks off on the 5th August at Southend. The friendly will allow Mowbray to analyse fitness levels and hopefully contribute to deciding the team that will start in the league.
The Minstermen, as York are known, have several players who could cause problems to Rovers. Jon Parkin is York’s main striker, and scored 13 in 19 for York last year in a forgettable season for York, but this does show he knows where the net is. Another key player for York is Simon Heslop, who captained his boyhood club York last season to the FA Trophy.
However, Rovers should have the quality to beat York. We look strong in midfield, after the additions of Whittingham, Smallwood, Dack and Gladwin. This has give Rovers a solid base in the middle of the pitch and allows for the defence to play it out from the back and develop the style of play Mowbray loves to play.
Overall, the game should allow Mowbray to continue experimenting with his players as well as improving the players’ fitness levels to the level that is needed in the highly competitive division that is League 1.
