Rovers v Rotherham United – Player Reviews

After Rovers picked up their second home win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Rotherham United, @jamesdixonbrfc reviews each player’s performance.

Blackburn took on Rotherham United at Ewood, coming away with a 2-0 victory. Rounded off by a very convincing performance. But, how did each player play?

Starting XI

David Raya (7.5)

Made 2 very good saves to deny what looked like certain goals Rotherham. However, distribution was somewhat shaky early on, but it smoothed out later in the game. Kept an important clean sheet.

Paul Caddis (8)

Played very well all game. Made some great runs forward, and made key interceptions throughout the game. Looked fit all game and linked up with the wingers well. Very solid performance throughout.

Paul Downing (7)

Like Caddis, a solid performance. Never really made any mistakes that would’ve led to any real chances. Quiet throughout, but did his job and did it well. Seemed to be a definite upgrade on Elliot Ward.

Charlie Mulgrew (7)

Played well, similar again to Downing and Caddis. However, he occasionally looked anxious and awkward when in position. Despite this, he captained the side well and kept a clean sheet.

Derrick Williams (6.5)

This season, he has never reached the heights he reached last season. However, in this game we saw glimpses of his old self, especially when getting forward. He was caught in possession a few times and at times looked shaky.

He played much better than he had in previous games this season.

Corry Evans (7)

Played well first half, did everything he needed to do. Made some good tackles and never made any big mistakes. However, he looked tired in the second half before being subbed off. But overall did his job.

Richie Smallwood (8)

Made some amazing tackles and, as the chant goes, never really gave the ball away. Made some good passes and got us out of some sticky situations. Commanded the midfield well and bossed it in the middle of the park.

Another great performance from the King of Ewood.

Elliot Bennett (8.5)

Created a number of good chances in the first half. Got into great positions and linked up well with fellow players. Played slightly more defensive in the second half, but played solid nevertheless. One of our best players on the pitch by far.

Bradley Dack (7.5)

Had a very good second half, played well, created chances and looked very lively throughout. However, started to tire second half and did not play as well as he was doing.

Linked up well with Dominic Samuel. Certainly should have scored.

Marcus Antonsson (7.5)

Scored our first goal of the night with a great finish. Looked lively down the wing, despite playing out of his natural position. However, he was dispossessed in dangerous positions more than once, and also missed a few shots that should have easily found the back of the net.

Dominic Samuel (6.5)

Looked lively. However, failed to make any real impact on the game. Created a few good chances, and made some good runs. He was dispossessed a few times and was kept quiet throughout.

Not a bad performance overall.

Dack for Chapman (9)

The only thing he did badly was not scoring twice!

Looked our best player on the pitch by far and bagged himself a goal. Could’ve easily had 2 more. Made a huge impact off the bench. It’s not often a man of the match is off the bench, but Chapman was, quite easily, our best player on the pitch.

Great performance Harry.

Evans for Whittingham  (6)

Never really had the time to make an impact. However, did not play badly by any standard. Had a chance to score, but was unable to convert it.

Samuel for Hart (7)

Playing in his first game for the Rovers, he looked lively down the wing and put some lovely balls into the box. Again, didn’t have the time to make a huge impact. Definitely, one to watch out for though.
