Rovers 3-0 Portsmouth – Player Ratings

After Rovers picked up an excellent 3-0 home win to Portsmouth, @talkofewood reviews each player’s performance.

Goals from Bradley Dack, Danny Graham and Craig Conway gave Rovers a comfortable victory, but it was marred by Dominic Samuel’s red card for swinging out at Pompey defender Christian Burgess.

So, how did each player play?

Please note, these ratings have been taken from an average of ratings from 10 of our contributors.

Starting XI

RAYA, David – 7.3/10 – Not much to do despite a fine save in the first half, which arguably could have been a difference maker in the game. Let that one in and everything changes. Another clean sheet.

NYAMBE, Ryan – 7.2/10 – Clean sheet on his right back return, solid at the back and an extra outlet on the wing. Useful asset to have. As much as Caddis is liked, Nyambe deserves the right back spot.

MULGREW, Charlie – 7.8/10 – After being denied by a fine save, he offered a solid display keeping a clean sheet for Rovers. Much improved from recent performances. Looks so much more composed when he has Paul Downing alongside him

DOWNING, Paul – 7.7/10 – 4 games. 4 clean sheets. Paul Downing can’t do much else to try cement his Rovers’ starting place over Elliott Ward. Worked superbly alongside Mulgrew once again. And to say MK Dons fans said he wasn’t good…

WILLIAMS, Derrick – 7.2/10 – Another clean sheet and a aesthetically pleasing assist for the second, effectively killing the game through his charge from defence. Solid as always. Still keeping his title of Mr. Consistent.

SMALLWOOD, Richie – 7.9/10 – The King of Ewood put in another great performance. He was solid in-front of Mulgrew and Downing and also put in a great attacking shift.

WHITTINGHAM, Peter – 7.1/10 – The best performance the former Cardiff man has put in for Rovers. He controlled the midfield alongside Smallwood and really gave us the backbone for attacking up the pitch.

BENNETT, Elliott – 7.9/10 – As lively as ever, never stopped working from 0-90. Bennett bragging rights stay in Lancashire for now. His best game for Rovers this season and fingers crossed this continues.

DACK, Bradley – 8.9/10 – Two goals in two games and constant energy throughout. His price tag is seeming to look a bargain now. I think he could develop a very strong connection with Graham if TM pursues it. Deserved man of the match.

CHAPMAN, Harry – 8/10 – First league start for the club, and he seemed determined to show what he has to offer. Electric from the word go, creating the first (Dack’s) goal brilliantly.

GRAHAM, Danny – 8.2/10 – Finally a good Graham performance. Finally a Graham goal. Great player to have at this level, in my opinion he needs to start each week. Samuel is good, but if we are wanting Dack in the #10 role then I feel Graham is more suited, he will hold up, feed to Dack and be there for through balls.

Substitutes

CONWAY, Craig (for Harry Chapman) – 7.6/10 – Delighted for Craig to get a goal. He worked really hard when he came on and deserved something at the end. Could be a good impact sub in future games.

SAMUEL, Dominic (for Danny Graham) – 2.9/10 – When he came on, he looked lively on the ball and had a chance but he ultimately missed. Then came the stupid part. Fair enough, Burgess was holding him up, but Samuel shouldn’t have kicked out like that.

EVANS, Corry (for Bradley Dack) – 6.6/10 – Evans wasn’t on the pitch long but helped secure the win. Stopped any threats from Pompey
