We talk to Rochdale forum rochdaleAFC.com ahead of tomorrow’s Checkatrade Trophy tie at the Crown Oil Arena.
How has the season gone so far for you?
“It’s been something of a disappointment so far. I’m not one for giving it scores, but it has been a steady 4-5 out of 10. We lost some important players over the Summer, but it’s we’ve just not found that spark so far. It’s not been disastrous, and we’re still picking up points but we don’t appear to be as strong as last year and we’re not used to that under Hilly.”
As both our sets of fans will know, Rovers won 3-0 at Spotland earlier this season. What did you think of that game?
“Was impressed by you, but the difference between what the teams have at their disposal was shown by the subs as you brought on a lad who was part of the League One winning side last year, a player who was League One Player of the Season the year before last and a striker who’s gone for millions during his career. I know the damage was done by that stage but it does highlight that huge disparity between the resources available at each club. You can thank your parachute payments for that.”
What is the general feeling about the Checkatrade Trophy for Rochdale fans?
“I think there’s been a growing feeling towards it. As we’ve become a half decent League One side, I think supporters have seen that the teams who win it are the sides that we compete with week in, week out so it’s common sense to think that we must stand some chance of winning it, and we’ve not exactly been laden with trophies over the years.”
What should we expect from Rochdale tomorrow?
“Dale boss Keith Hill has promised one of our youth products a regular run out in the Checkatrade this season, so I think we’ll see Daniel Adshead starting for us. That’s assuming that he doesn’t get too much homework as he’s still in Year 11 at school. We’ve had Saturday’s game with Wigan called off due international duty (on their part, not ours) so we might not see as many other changes as we might have done.”
Who is your player to watch and why?
“Captain Ian Henderson is our star man. He’s been with us for about five years now, and there’s some stat doing the round that he’s one of the top scorers for any individual side during that time. He pretty much plays everywhere (though that probably means he’ll get rested for tomorrow).”
How do you think the game will go?
“Checkatrades are notoriously difficult to call as you never know the strength of the sides that will be put out. Hilly is keen for us to progress but given our lack of success on penalties this season, we might go all out to win it inside 90 minutes.”
“Blackburn to win 3-0 on penalties after 0-0 at full time.”
