Oldham Athletic Fan Preview – Thomas O’Dea

We talk to Oldham fan Thomas O’Dea about his thoughts tomorrow’s clash at Boundary Park.

What do you make of your team’s transfers in the summer window?

“I was pleased with the signing of Dan Gardner, the return of Craig Davies proved popular & Rob Evans played on loan last season and was a key player in helping us stay up.

However, I felt Shez (John Sheridan) left it too late with signing a keeper, after failing to get Ripley back. But the bit of business was done towards the end of the month – bringing in Jack Byrne, Bryan Kean & Eion Doyle. The signing of Johnny Placide looks good also & Queensy Menig is highly rated although my own honest opinion I want to see more of him.”

What do you think of Blackburn Rovers’ summer deals?

“Decent enough for League One.

Whittingham will give you much needed experience, Caddis has played at this level before. Dack is a good signing, especially if he can find the form he had during the 2015/16 season.”

Who is your team’s player to watch and why?

“Right now it’s between Jack Bryne & Eoin Doyle. Bryne is fast and not afraid to shoot, whilst Doyle is looking more lethal than any of our strikers in the past five years.”

How has the first two months of your season been?

“It’s a tale of two months. In August, we was poor, we didn’t look good, couldn’t score & we only named three subs at times!

In September, our fortunes have changed the new players plus the return of Gardner (who was suspended for the first 3 games) has injected & brought new life into the team.

We have picked up 3 wins in the league & climbed out the bottom four. We still had issues off the pitch with investment from a guy called Abdallah Lemsagam but fans left in the dark & more recently, players not being paid on time.”

How do you see your season going?

“If we appoint the right manager – I am hoping Wellens gets the job & keeps hold of these players – I don’t see why we cannot push and climb up the table. However, my other worry is off the pitch issues causing concern & unwanted distractions.”

What should we expect to see from Oldham Athletic?

“A team currrently on a good run of form, a team capable of scoring goals but also let a fair few goals in.

“The team is playing with confidence going forward at times. Early on. we looked afraid to shoot & seemed to pass it around the back too much. I think Blackburn will be looking at this game & thinking it’s the wrong time to play Oldham as we have found our form.”

How do you think the game will go?

“Hopefully, a good entertaining lively encounter. Good to see a bigger crowd and a noisy Boundary Park.

It’s a known fact that in the 70’s up until the early 90’s, Oldham v Blackburn was a regular fixture. Also, since I know a fair few Rovers fans, it was the first fixture I looked out for this year. An article by one of your fans mentioned that, so fingers crossed it will be a good game and hopefully a Oldham win. I’d be surprised if it was a dull 0-0.”

What do you think the score will be and who will score?

“Going to say 2-1, Oldham Byrne & Doyle to score.”
