Rovers have announced the loan signing of hot prospect Rekeem Harper on loan from West Brom until the end of the season.
17 year old Rekeem Harper has joined Rovers today on a season long loan from Premier League side West Bromwich Albion.
Mowbray had tried to sign Harper earlier this month, but the deal was stopped after Harper made his Premier League debut in the first week of the season. However, after West Brom signed Barry and Krychowiak, it opened the door for Harper to go out on loan.
The 17 year old striker becomes Rovers’ 11th signing of the summer and the first of deadline day. At only 17, Harper would become Blackburn’s first ever player to play in the first team that was born in the 21st Century. Harper plays in an attacking midfield role but can also play as a striker.
Even at only the age of 17, Rekeem Harper has made a Premier league appearance earlier this season as a sub in a 1–0 win over Bournemouth. The talented teenager has already stated his desire to play first team football, saying that he loves to play counter attacking football – a style of play which is favourable to West Brom manager Tony Pulis.
The 17 year old has also represented England at U17’s level, most recently for the Algarve tournament in February early this year.
Blackburn have signed several central midfielders this season, so questions would have to be asked if he could break into the first team or if he will remain in the development squad.
His desire to play first team football is clear from how he managed to push his way into the West Brom first team, so if he is able to show that level of commitment and ability, Blackburn could have a real player on their hands who could prove to be deadly at League 1 level.
Harper has the potential to be a great player in the future, let’s hope that he shows glimpses of that for Rovers this season.
