Southend United are based in Essex, in the namesake place of Southend-on-Sea. They were founded on the 19th May 1906 in the Blue Boar pub. The Shrimpers have been a Football League member since 1920, and they have spent most of their career in the lower leagues of the English Football League, with only seven seasons in the Second Tier (Championship). As of the end of the 2016–17 season, the team have spent 25 seasons in the fourth tier of the English football league system, 58 in the third, and 7 in the second
Southend are one of four clubs who have a 100% record against Manchester United – alongside Zenit St Petersburg, Vasco de Gama and Bootle Reserves!
The Seasiders were promoted through the play-offs in the 2014-15 season, after finishing 5th. This will be Southend's 3rd consecutive season in League One, having finished 14th and 7th in the previous two seasons respectively. Their top scorer last season was Simon Cox, with 16 goals in the league.
Southend will be hoping Simon Cox can be part of their quest to at least getting into the play-offs this season and, coupled with The Shrimpers keeping Ryan Leonard and signing Michael Kightly, this dream could come true for the Essex based side next season.
