Scunthorpe were founded in 1899, turned professional in 1912 and joined the Football League in 1950. The Iron achieved promotion to Division Two in 1958, where it stayed until 1964, but has spent most of its time as a Football League club in the bottom tier.
Scunthorpe was promoted from League Two in 2005, and then spent three out of four seasons from 2007 in the Championship. The Iron were relegated to Football League One in 2011, when they finished bottom of the Championship. The club then suffered a second relegation, being relegated to the Football League Two in 2013. However. the Iron won promotion back to the third tier at the end of the 2013–14 season.
This season will be their 4th consecutive season in League One, having finished 16th, 7th and 3rd respectively. In the 2016-17 season, the Iron were knocked out of the play-offs in the semi-finals by eventual play-off winners Millwall.
Last season's top scorer Josh Morris scored 19 – an ex-Rover – and will be hoping to fire Scunthorpe one step further up to the Championship, for the 1st time since the 2010-11 season.
The Iron have stole a commanding defender from Bradford City in the form of Rory McArdle and look like a strong contender for promotion next season. Rovers will need to be wary of threats like Scunthorpe.
