Countdown – Oldham Athletic

To continue our countdown to the new season, which starts in 8 days, RoversChat will be looking at the teams that Rovers will be facing in the 2017/18 season. The second of two teams we will look at today is Oldham Athletic…

Name: Oldham Athletic

Manager: John Sheridan

Ground Name: Boundary Park

Capacity: 13,512

Nickname: The Latics

Star player: Peter Clarke

Players in: Craig Davies, Courtney Duffus

Players out: Lee Croft, Charles Dunne, Josh Law, Michael Ngoo, Jamie Reckford

Formed in 1895, former Premier League side Oldham have found themselves in the 3rd tier of English football since 1997, reaching the play-offs just once in that time. Finishing 17th last season, yet again this season Oldham have to consider another low, to mid table finish a success. In order to do that, they will be hoping no nonsense defender Peter Clarke will put in commanding performances at the heart of their defence.

At the top end of the pitch, new boy Courtney Duffus will be hoping to make an impact by finding the back of the net regularly. I would not expect Oldham to challenge towards the top of the table, but stranger things have happened.

In John Sheridan, they have a competent manager and fans will be hoping that maybe he can help exceed expectations and mount an unlikely play off charge.

With a foot in both camps, Rovers legend David Dunn ended his playing career at Oldham after being appointed their manager. This ill-fated decision tarnished his short stint at Boundary Park, due to his dire record in which he won just 3 of his 20 games in charge.
