Gillingham were founded in 1893 as New Brompton, and then joined the Football League 27 years ago. The Gills were voted out of the Football League at the end of the 1937-38 season, before returning 12 years later when it was expanded from 88 to 92 teams. GIllingham have only ever made to the second tier of English football, between 2000 and 2005 – with their highest ever finish of 11th.
The Gills most successful season in the current decade was the 2015-16, in which they just missed out on the play-offs. Their key player was Rovers’ new boy Bradley Dack, who finished the season with 15 goals in 44 appearances in all competitions and 11 assists in the league.
However, last season was a season to forget for the Gills. They finished one point above the dreaded relegation zone – and stayed up on the last day. Gillingham will be hoping that this season is more like the 2015-16 season, rather than like last year.
