Coventry City v Blackburn Rovers – Match Preview

Rovers head to the Ricoh Arena on Tuesday night to take on Coventry in the first round of the EFL cup.

Tony Mowbray comes up against one of his former sides as Rovers look to progress into round two of the League cup. Coventry are starting their first season in the fourth tier since 1958/59 and will be hoping a cup run can bring some positivity into one of the only English clubs going through darker days than Blackburn.

The League Cup under its various sponsorship formats (currently Carabao) was enjoyable enough in the 2000's. Winning the entire thing at the Millennium in 2001/02 and that thrilling 6-4 semi-final against Villa spring to mind immediately. However, in recent times it has been short of outstanding, last year's third round exit at Leeds being the first time in 3 years we've progressed past the first round with home defeats to then League 2 Scunthorpe and Shrewsbury respectively were disappointing and set a precedent for things to come.

Coventry come into the clash on the back of a comfortable Jodi Jones inspired 3-0 home win against Notts County and will want to get a run of early season form going with a win against a Blackburn side who, as we can all remember, rolled over pretty pathetically in our 2-1 defeat at Southend over the weekend. Blackburn will have to contend with hat trick hero Jodi Jones up top for the Sky Blues, and will more than likely have to deal with him without Darragh Lenihan, after he walked his way through the final 10 minutes of Saturdays game with an obvious injury.

Coventry's new look centre half partnership of Dominic Hyam and Rodney McDonald kept a clean sheet on Saturday but how will they fare against Danny Graham and Bradley Dack, presuming we can prise him away from the cast of Love Island and into a kit, that is.
